Apollo's Statue

PictureCharcoal on butcher paper, 30"x 48", August 2019
This statue of the Greek god Apollo holding a lyre was one of the many I saw in the Vatican. I chose this statue as I was drawn to the movement -- the robes billowing in the wind, Apollo extending his arm out. This piece is drawn from a photo I took when I was there.
This is the largest piece I have worked on so far. I realized that it took a lot more time and effort to draw, both because of its size and because the subject was very different from the portraits I was used to drawing. I also realized that every mistake in proportion and shading would be amplified, so I spent a lot more time erasing entire sections of the drawing and fixing them. I also spent a lot of time smoothing out and darkening the background.
